Course Overview

Stage 5

In the 200 hour German course students work with textbooks after they have made a start with the first 2 books of the Beginn mit Deutsch materials. The Beginn mit Deutsch materials are self-contained which allows students to begin their German work immediately while waiting for the textbook order to arrive.

The textbook for Year 9 is called Genau! and the one for Year 10 GanzGenau! In their textbooks students follow the adventures of a group of German students and their Australian exchange students. Both the Kursbuch (Student Book) and the Arbeitsbuch (Workbook) are used. Students receive the audio CDs of the textbook series on loan. There is also a website with interactive tasks and the cartoon stories from the textbooks. On request, the course teacher can supply a CD-ROM which is a capture of the Genau part of the ThomsonLearning website.

Fortnightly phone contact with their teacher allows the students to do their speaking practice and discuss any questions they might have regarding the course.

A virtual class allows students immediate access to the instruction sheets, work-return sheets, answers to self-correction exercises, interactive exercises of the Beginn mit Deutsch books.

Stage 6

German Beginners

For the Preliminary course there are 15 Modules that guide and support the learners. Each Module clearly states what work the students have to submit.

Fortnightly phone contact with their teacher allows for the speaking practice the students need in the Beginners course, and also for more immediate support of the students in their learning.

The Preliminary course students start their work with the self-contained Beginn mit Deutsch materials. They use the cartoon stories from the Genau! textbook which are on the ThomsonLearning website and interactive exercises to expand their vocabulary and practise what they have learnt. (A CD-ROM which is a capture of that part of the ThomsonLearning website can be provided on request.)

In addition, the Genau! Arbeitsbuch (Workbook) is used to consolidate their learning of language patterns.

For the HSC course printed leaflets (called HSC course Units) with accompanying CDs, together with a textbook (Student Book and Workbook of GanzGENAU!) are used. HSC-type tasks throughout the HSC course give students the opportunity to develop good exam technique.

German Continuers

The Continuers course consists of 7 Modules, one for each term of the course. Modules 1 to 3 are set for the three terms of the Preliminary course. Modules 4 to 7 are the HSC course. Each Module has 5 Parts. The students are given 2 school weeks to complete the work of a “Part” of a Module.

The course includes self-directed learning. Many of the self-correction exercises have been transformed for interactive correction over the Internet. They are accessible on the QUIA site. Students can access them most conveniently through the LinkSharing in our virtual class on the Nicenet server: http://www.nicenet.org

The virtual German Continuers classes (Preliminary and HSC course) are exclusively for students doing the German Continuers course with Open High School. The virtual classes are protected learning environments and the students need to be signed in, so that they can access it with a username and a password. Students can message each other and feel part of a group. In addition to the above mentioned features, students can access the timeline for their course, and tasks that reflect the latest syllabus requirements and are created to give the students more opportunity to practise HSC-style questions.

German Extension

The theme 'The individual in Contemporary Society' is the organisational focus of the Extension Course and will be studied through a number of 'Issues' and a range of texts. To be well-prepared for the Assessment tasks leading to the Higher School Certificate, students need to follow the work plans for each term closely. In the German Extension Course four short stories are studied as Prescribed Texts. Also part of the Extension course work are a selection of so-called Related Texts (texts the school has chosen for the study of the 'Issues') to prepare for essay writing and monologues (speaking skills).

For each short story students can download a Study Guide and revision materials from the virtual German Extension class (German Extension on the Open High Moodle Website). In our virtual class, students can access a wealth of help sheets for essay writing and preparing monologues. Audio files can be down-loaded with ease. There are forums for discussion and exchange of ideas.

The virtual class is a protected learning environment and the students need to be signed in, so that they can access it with a username and a password. The class is exclusively for students doing the German Extension course with the Open High School.

Germany is a major industrialized nation in Central Europe, and is a federal union of 16 states (Länder). Before that time, Germany had been a confederacy (1815-1867) and, before 1806, a collection of separate and quite different principalities.
