Principal's Message

Welcome to Open High School, the only school in the state to offer the opportunity to study one or more of 13 languages to students in Years 9 to 12 from all education sectors.

In the 2012 Higher School Certificate, Open High School students achieved first place in each of the following languages:

• Chinese Extension
• Indonesian Extension
• Indonesian Beginners
• Italian Beginners
• Modern Greek Beginners
• Spanish Continuers.

In addition, 22% of HSC students achieved a mark in Band 6 and 29% in Band 5 in their 2 Unit course, while 35% of students studying an Extension course achieved a mark in the top band.

In the School Certificate, 86% of students were placed in the top two performance bands for 100 and 200 hour courses, and the school exceeded the state average for the number of students in the top grade.

Late last year, the school was accredited as a MindMatters school as a result of focusing on student wellbeing and, in particular, independent learning skills. Staff are working on embedding the teaching of these most important skills into Year 9 and Year 11 courses to ease students’ transition into distance education.

In 2012, Open High School introduced Stage 6 ESL into the curriculum with an enrolment of 10 students from regional and rural DEC schools. These students are still with us in 2013 and are working towards their HSC. In addition, a further 13 students have enrolled into the Preliminary course.
